If you only glanced at RLX Technology’s headlines, the story might look upbeat. Revenue and profit both improved over the latest reported quarter, yet the share price told a very different story. Investors who held RLX Technology over the past year are down 30.1%, including dividends. If you were weighing a position back in October 2025, the real question is which early signals hinted that better results might still lead to weaker returns.

The shares cost US$2.42 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at RLX Technology then had to decide which story felt more convincing.
On the upbeat side, the bullish view pointed to a Fair Value of US$3.04, essentially the price implied if revenue grew 26.3% a year and the business reached a 17.9% profit margin under a 31.2x future P/E assumption.
The cautious camp put forward a Fair Value of US$2.26, arguing that stricter vaping rules and heavy reliance on China could limit the addressable market and squeeze profitability.
RLX Technology’s later reports showed the bullish story partly playing out on scale. Q2 2026 revenue reached ¥916.89m versus ¥794.12m a year earlier and net income was roughly flat at about ¥217m, helped by rapid international expansion and a 51% European distributor stake. The catch was profitability. Net margin slipped from 27.3% to 23.7%, so the evidence cut both ways.
The lesson is simple. When a thesis leans on stronger earnings quality, track margin trends and segment mix instead of looking only at headline revenue or profit, and test whether growth is arriving with or without compression.
Today RLX Technology trades at US$1.6. The selected Narrative sees Fair Value above that level and ties the gap to how efficiently the group turns international reach, Nexus manufacturing and a multi product hub into steadier earnings.
For the fall to look like an opportunity rather than a warning, a buyer now would need to believe RLX can convert its broader overseas platform into a higher quality, resilient profit mix despite tighter rules and thinner downstream margins.
"The main factor that has to go right is that RLX turns its now majority international revenue base, European distribution platform and Southeast Asia manufacturing hub into a durable, higher quality earnings mix despite tighter regulation and lower margin downstream businesses."

RLX Technology pushes you to think about concentration. One product category. One regulatory theme. One type of consumer moment.
You could instead look at businesses built around everyday habits. Think snacks on the couch, drinks at work, quick meals on the go.
Another multinational quietly focuses on those routines, not on nicotine. It sells drinks and convenient foods that appear in ordinary baskets and restaurant orders.
The interesting angle is repetition. When customers keep buying the same refreshments, cash flows can follow different patterns to a single category like RLX.
