Listen to the news

Key Points

  • Revenue increased 13.1% to $1.59 billion in the third quarter.

  • Operating ratio improved by 280 basis points to 71.5%.

  • September LTL tons per day rose 1.6% year over year.

On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 28, 2026, Old Dominion (NASDAQ:ODFL) announced a 13.1% increase in third-quarter revenue to $1.59 billion. Long-term investors can evaluate how efficiently the company converts revenue growth into operating profit while maintaining service advantages over market rivals. Three things management said stand out.

1. Ample Capacity Positions the Fleet for Market Share Gains

Maintaining excess real estate and equipment allows the business to absorb new shipping volumes quickly without incurring immediate capital costs. That infrastructure gives it a distinct advantage over rivals facing capacity constraints.

Due to our disciplined execution and consistent investment, we have all the necessary elements of capacity in place to effectively handle incremental volume opportunities while also continuing to operate efficiently.
-- Kevin Freeman, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Superior Service Quality Drives Long-Term Pricing Power

Delivering reliable service allows the business to command higher prices that offset cost inflation over time. That disciplined yield management supports consistent reinvestment into network infrastructure and technology.

Our ongoing focus on providing our customers with superior service at a fair price is the cornerstone of our long term strategic plan.
-- Kevin Freeman, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Network Operating Leverage Unlocks Profit Expansion

Fixed overhead costs create powerful operating leverage whenever shipping density increases across the network. That cost structure turns incremental top-line gains into margin expansion.

So, we have got tremendous leverage that we will continue to take advantage of from an overhead cost standpoint as we continue to grow our revenues.
-- Adam N. Satterfield, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Shipping demand continues to improve across industrial and retail accounts. Excess service center capacity and low cargo claim rates position the carrier to capture additional volume without driving up fixed overhead. Long-term value depends on pricing discipline and network density.

Based on these results, I currently anticipate revenue of $1.54 billion to $1.58 billion for the fourth quarter which would be above our normal seasonality.
-- Adam N. Satterfield, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

The carrier maintains structural advantages in driver retention and real estate that competitors struggle to duplicate. Disciplined capital allocation ensures it can leverage volume gains as broader market conditions improve.

As a result, we continue to believe that we are uniquely positioned within our industry to win market share, generate profitable revenue growth and increase shareholder value over the long term.
-- Kevin Freeman, President and Chief Executive Officer
