According to Woofun AI, Alphabet (GOOGL.US)'s third-quarter results announced after the market on October 28 fell short of expectations, and its tokenized stock price on the Robinhood (HOOD.US) platform fell nearly 12% in response. This negative fluctuation in traditional financial markets directly triggered the panic sell-off of on-chain assets, causing partial liquidity discounts for tokenized stocks rather than systemic changes in the entire RWA (real world asset) price system.
The sell-off was triggered by financial reports disclosed after the market on the same day. Alphabet's third-quarter revenue was $127.58 billion, below market expectations of $128.2 billion; adjusted earnings per share were $2.67, below expectations of $3.02; and recorded free cash flow of -$90.7 billion. After the financial report was announced, its stock price once fell by more than 10% in after-market trading, and the decline was still close to 10% at the close.
Judging from the microstructure of transactions, this cross-market emotional contagion is extremely instantaneous and explosive. According to data compiled by Woofun AI, the relevant trading pool on Uniswap processed approximately $60.3 million in transactions within just five minutes after the price change occurred. The token's decline of nearly 12% was higher than the decline of the underlying stocks by about 10%. The difference of about 2 percentage points is a reflection of the narrowing of the premium on the chain during the market closure period.
This data shows that although the overall liquidity of tokenized stocks is still limited, under extreme market conditions, algorithmic trading and arbitrage mechanisms will rapidly amplify price fluctuations, leading to local liquidity exhaustion. Notably, this decline was not an isolated event, but a direct reflection of the sharp drop in stock prices on the chain after the end of regular trading hours, revealing how uncertainty after the traditional stock market closed seamlessly penetrated into DeFi agreements.
The more critical variable is that such incidents revealed a close and weak linkage mechanism between tokenized assets and traditional underlying assets. When traditional markets are closed or there is a sudden downturn, on-chain tokens often become the first responders, and may even exacerbate the decline due to lack of liquidity. Following many previous cases of RWA price decoupling, this once again verifies the vulnerability of tokenized stocks in dealing with end-of-side risks in traditional markets. Future improvements in supervision and market maker mechanisms will be the key to stabilizing the prices of such assets.
