If you only skimmed the headlines about Royalty Pharma’s shrinking net margin in Q2 2026, you might not expect a standout payoff from holding the shares. For Royalty Pharma shareholders, the return over the past year was 80.2%, including dividends. If you had been weighing the bullish and bearish cases back in October 2025, how could such a strong outcome sit alongside falling profitability? And what does that say about the real driver of this business?

The shares cost US$36.41 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Royalty Pharma then had to choose between two very different but plausible stories.
On the optimistic side, the bullish narrative argued that new therapies and global licensing could widen Royalty Pharma’s royalty pool. Its Fair Value was US$44.86, the price those growth assumptions implied, tied to revenue rising 20.0% a year and a future P/E of 31.8x.
The bearish view focused on pressure instead of expansion. That narrative set Fair Value at US$32.19 and leaned on risks like tighter drug pricing, higher funding costs, and rising competition for royalty assets.
Royalty Pharma’s Q2 2026 report gave the bullish case some backing on scale. Total revenue reached US$674.141 million, above the US$578.665 million seen in Q2 2025. Profit told a different tale. Net income fell from US$32.176 million to US$17.883 million and net margin declined from 5.6% to 2.7%, so overall the evidence cut both ways.
The hinge assumption here was richer profitability on a growing royalty base. When you look at another stock built on a similar pitch, check whether revenue, net income and margin each move in the same direction before treating the growth story as proven.
Today Royalty Pharma trades at US$64.82, well above where the year began, while the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below the current price.
The Narrative hinges on whether deal flow, data tools and a broad pipeline can keep offsetting pressure on future royalty streams and cash generation.
"The main thing that has to go right is that Royalty Pharma keeps converting its royalty and synthetic royalty deal flow, AI and data capabilities, and expanding development pipeline into attractive long term returns despite rising investment needs and capital intensity."
That disagreement has a full argument behind it. → Uncover the lower Fair Value this Narrative argues for
