SSAB (OM:SSAB A) Stock Faces Q3 Results With Decarbonisation Costs Ahead
Share
Listen to the news

SSAB stock has cooled over the past month, down about 6%, yet the latest Q3 2026 report landed with sturdier numbers than that slide suggests. The headline is clear. Operating profit reached SEK 3.3b and the group finished the quarter with SEK 8.4b in net cash, leaving the balance sheet in solid shape for a capital intensive steel producer.

Short term traders are reacting to softer near term momentum. Longer term holders are more likely to focus on that cash rich position and the heavy decarbonisation spend still ahead, which both anchor the real investment debate from here.

SSAB Premium Steel Ambition Meets Concrete Project Progress

The bullish story around SSAB hinges on turning heavy investment into a larger, richer mix of premium and fossil free steel, not just on holding a strong balance sheet.

"Bullish analysts expect SSAB to convert its blast furnaces on time, expand higher margin premium grades such as advanced high strength and defense steels, and further differentiate its products from standard steel."

Here the evidence is tangible. The Oxelösund blast furnace is now permanently closed and the site is running on an electric arc furnace with fossil free feedstock. Ground has been broken on the SEK 3.3b quenching line that targets an extra 100,000 tonnes of premium output from 2030, while Q3 showed growth in advanced high strength steels and Special Steels volumes versus last year.

SSAB Margins: Bear Worries Meet Mixed Evidence

Bears argue that SSAB’s long transition risks grinding down profitability as outages stack up and maintenance stays heavy.

"Extensive maintenance outages guided to reduce results by about SEK 800m in Q3 2026, along with full year maintenance costs similar to 2025, highlight how keeping maintenance capex around SEK 3b per year does not prevent sizeable production interruptions in Special Steels and Europe."

Q3 did show the outage hit. Shipments fell 13% quarter on quarter and revenue eased 7% as maintenance cut volumes. Yet operating profit of SEK 3.3b still rose year on year and EBITDA per tonne improved, which implies margin pressure is present but not yet spiralling.

Hunt Quiet Mispricings Before They Close

SSAB just showed how a strong cash position can exist alongside major investment decisions facing shareholders. The real opportunity could sit in stocks that could be undervalued before the market closes the gap.

  • Company 1 - 50% below our estimate - targets richer direct channels and niche gear where efficiency gains support higher operating margins.
  • Company 2 - 37% below our estimate - extends brake and safety systems into signaling and smart electronics tied to rail upgrade programs.
  • Company 3 - 41% below our estimate - supplies high value cables and services into grid renewal and data center infrastructure projects.

That is three of the list. See the full list of 191 companies trading below our fair value estimates →
