DigitalOcean Is Up 163%, But The Story Isn't Finished

Listen to the news

If DigitalOcean was on your watchlist rather than in your portfolio, the return may sting. Investors who held DigitalOcean over the past year are up 163.5%, including dividends. That gain came as the business leaned into AI infrastructure, signed larger multiyear customers, and accepted lower net margin in Q2 2026 as expansion costs hit the income statement. If you rewind to late 2025, what confidence in AI-led revenue growth would have justified owning that risk trade off?

Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

DigitalOcean has already moved. Pinpoint other ways to investigate the theme among 54 AI infrastructure stocks.

The Two DigitalOcean Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$39.6 at the start of the period, so any call on DigitalOcean hinged on which story about its future you believed.

The bullish narrative saw fair value at US$41.6, built on assumed 14.6% annual revenue growth, a 14.5% profit margin, and a future P/E of 26.9x over three years, with AI-led expansion among SMBs doing the heavy lifting.

The bearish view put fair value at US$31.75, focused on cloud consolidation, price-sensitive small business customers, and the risk that standardised services and rising compliance costs would pressure margins and limit market share.

What The Results Changed In The DigitalOcean Debate

DigitalOcean’s Q2 2026 update showed revenue at US$281.2 million versus US$218.7 million a year earlier, while net income slipped to US$35.4 million from US$37.0 million and net margin fell to 12.6% from 16.9%. Faster top line growth supported the bullish focus on AI demand, but weaker profitability kept the margin part of that case unproven. The evidence cut both ways.

The whole episode turned on one assumption investors made in October 2025: that heavier AI spend would translate into both higher sales and stronger net margin. When assessing another AI infrastructure stock, track whether revenue growth and net margin move together or start to diverge in quarterly results.

What DigitalOcean’s Price Already Bakes In

DigitalOcean now trades at US$99.97, after a 163.5% gain over the past year. The selected Narrative views Fair Value as higher than that level, grounded in AI customer ARR, usage patterns and planned capacity.

The crux for any buyer is whether AI inference and agent services keep scaling ARR per megawatt in line with those assumptions.

"Accelerating adoption among digital native enterprises and AI-native customers, now supported by AI customer ARR of US$234 million and very rapid growth in inference services that exceed 70% of AI ARR, continues to expand DigitalOcean Holdings' addressable market and can support higher incremental annual recurring revenue, which is a direct input to future top line growth."

Looking Beyond DigitalOcean’s AI Bet

DigitalOcean shows how AI-heavy workloads can reset expectations around infrastructure and usage. You could stop there, or ask what powers the heaviest jobs.

Large AI models need massive, reliable computing capacity to train and run. Some providers now specialise in building huge clusters designed for those demands.

One player has leaned into that role, constructing vast data campuses and linking them into a single computing fabric.

It also connects that hardware to databases and business software, so customers can run AI, store data and manage operations on one stack.

If that whole-stack model keeps attracting large AI projects, the economics around those clusters could diverge sharply from a typical cloud story.
