Kirby stock barely flinched after Q3 2026 earnings, slipping about 0.05% to roughly $146 despite another quarter of record profitability. Traders shrugged. Long term holders will likely not. The inland and coastal marine operator just posted basic EPS of about $2.10 on revenue close to $977 million, pushing trailing twelve month earnings to almost $7 a share.
The short term tape looks sleepy. Yet the bigger story is a business that keeps compounding earnings while carrying debt of about $1.07b against a relatively moderate 23.7% debt to capitalization ratio. The price barely moved; the profit engine did.

Earnings tell you what Kirby just reported. Cash flows tell you what you might actually be paying for with each share.
When you line up Kirby's recent cash generation against the current share price, the stock could be a hefty 42% undervalued.
The upbeat story leans heavily on scarce barges and a swelling power backlog turning into a richer mix and higher profitability.
"The main thing that has to go right is that Kirby continues to convert its inland and coastal pricing leverage and its US$1.0 to 1.5 billion power generation backlog into high-teens to low-20% marine margins and improving Distribution & Services profitability while keeping cost headwinds manageable."
Q3 inland margins around 20% and marine near 20% indicate that pricing leverage is currently translating into the targeted range. Distribution & Services margins around 12% and book to bill above 1, with backlog now above US$1.5 billion, support the idea that higher margin power projects and service work are gaining traction.
The concern is that weak end markets and rising expenses may mute that operating upside even when demand holds.
"Ongoing softness and secular decline in conventional oil and gas equipment demand, combined with the guided double digit revenue declines and weaker operating income in Kirby's oil and gas focused Distribution and Services business, can keep segment revenue and earnings under pressure and reduce the overall contribution to consolidated earnings."
Oil and gas now represent roughly 10% of Distribution & Services revenue, with activity described as stable and operating income improving on higher margin parts and service. Segment margins around 12% and record consolidated EPS indicate this drag is currently contained, although fuel and labor inflation still weigh on profitability.
