Listen to the news

Key Points

  • Dutch Bros continues to aggressively expand its drive-thru footprint.

  • Monster Beverage maintains a dominant market position with high net margins and a robust global distribution partnership with Coca-Cola.

  • Which beverage stock deserves a spot in your portfolio?

High-growth coffee meets the established energy drink kingpin. As consumer habits shift toward portable energy, deciding between Dutch Bros (NYSE:BROS) and Monster Beverage (NASDAQ:MNST) requires weighing aggressive expansion against steady profitability.

Dutch Bros is a fast-growing drive-thru chain focusing on customer culture and specialty beverages. Monster Beverage is a global leader in the energy drink category with high net margins and a deep partnership with bottling giants. Both companies cater to the high-demand beverage market but offer different risk profiles for investors.

The case for Dutch Bros

Dutch Bros operates a drive-thru beverage chain serving handcrafted drinks, including specialty coffee, Rebel energy drinks, tea, and lemonade. As a prominent player in the consumer discretionary sector, the company emphasizes speed and a unique corporate culture to attract younger demographics. The business model relies on a mix of company-operated shops and franchised locations, with a strategy currently focused on rapid unit growth across the United States. Its recent acquisition of Clutch Coffee demonstrates an intent to accelerate this expansion by converting existing locations into its own brand.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $1.6 billion, representing growth of approximately 27.9% over the prior year. The company reported net income of roughly $79.8 million for the period, which is a significant increase from the roughly $35.3 million earned in FY 2024.

The case for Monster Beverage

Monster Beverage develops and markets energy drinks under several popular brands, including its flagship Monster Energy, Reign, and Bang. The company primarily sells its products to full-service beverage bottlers and distributors, maintaining a deep commercial relationship with Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO). This partnership provides Monster Beverage with a massive global distribution network, helping it reach customers across the globe. By outsourcing the capital-intensive bottling process to partners, the company maintains a lean business model that focuses on brand development and marketing.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $8.3 billion, representing growth of approximately 10.7% compared to the previous year. Monster Beverage also reported net income of roughly $1.9 billion, resulting in a robust net margin of approximately 23%. The company has historically maintained high profitability levels, which is a key differentiator in the beverage industry.

Risk profile comparison

Dutch Bros faces intense competition from established coffee chains like Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX), along with quick-service restaurants and convenience stores. The company's aggressive expansion strategy carries execution risks, including potential labor shortages, rising material costs, and regulatory delays in new markets. Because its operations are heavily concentrated in the Western United States, it is also sensitive to regional economic shifts or weather disruptions.

Monster Beverage is highly dependent on its distribution relationship with Coca-Cola, which limits its alternative options if that partnership were to change. The company also faces stiff competition from rivals such as Celsius Holdings (NASDAQ:CELH) and PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP) in a crowded energy drink market. Regulatory scrutiny regarding caffeine content and ingredient safety remains a constant headwind for the industry. Furthermore, its expansion into the alcohol sector through acquisitions involves complex new regulations and integration risks that differ from its core non-alcoholic energy drink business.

Valuation comparison

Dutch Bros carries a higher earnings multiple reflecting its rapid growth, whereas Monster Beverage trades at a higher sales multiple due to its superior net margin profile.

Which stock would I buy today?

This is a difficult battle because I like both companies. Dutch Bros has plenty of expansion opportunities, as it is in fewer than 30 states. Monster has a more established presence throughout the United States, so it is finding new revenue opportunities abroad. Each company also faces intense competition within its respective industry, and there's some direct competition as well, as Dutch Bros leans into offering its own energy drinks.

Between the two, if I had to pick, I would still rather own Monster. It gains an edge because of that more established brand mentioned earlier, as Dutch Bros is still in the process of building its following. Also, as evidenced by the sales opportunities, Monster is currently generating noticeably more revenue, with $8.1 billion in sales in 2025 compared to the $1.6 billion Dutch Bros recorded. Monster also has a stronger track record potential investors can look to, as Dutch Bros only went public in 2021. Also, thus far in 2026, Monster's stock price returns of 19% is outperforming the 13.1% gains from the S&P 500, while Dutch Bros is massively underperforming, with its stock down nearly 30%. Dutch Bros can get things back on track if it eases investors' concerns about its expansion plans, but in the meantime, the stock could continue to struggle. That's why, heading into 2027, I would rather own Monster over Dutch Bros, as Monster is on solid ground while Dutch Bros is still trying to find its footing.
