What Investors Got Wrong About IREN Before A 55% Slide
Share
Listen to the news

If you had bought IREN at the end of October 2025, based on bullish assumptions about 40% revenue growth, 24% profit margins and a rich 60x future P/E supported by Bitcoin and early AI wins, the outcome would have felt very different from the pitch. For IREN shareholders, the loss over the past year was 54.9%, including dividends. Which of those starting assumptions proved too fragile, and which parts of the thesis still look intact?

The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.

The move put IREN in the middle of this trade. Scan 54 AI infrastructure stocks for other companies exposed to it.

The Argument You Would Have Been Weighing Up On IREN

The shares cost US$60.42 at the start of the period, and you had to decide which story about IREN felt more realistic.

On the bullish side, the earlier October 2025 view put Fair Value at US$72.52, about 20% above the start price. This was built on 40% revenue growth and a 24% profit margin over a 5 year horizon, plus a future P/E of 60x.

The October 27 bear case set Fair Value at US$29.55, 51% below the start price. It assumed 45.6% annual revenue growth and a 52.7% profit margin, but warned about heavy debt funded expansion and volatile Bitcoin linked and AI cloud revenues.

What The Results Changed For The IREN Thesis

The big development was IREN’s pivot toward AI cloud, backed by multi billion contracts with Microsoft, Nvidia and others and large GPU financing that matched the original bullish story about new business lines. The results told a harsher story. Quarterly revenue fell and a profit of US$176.7m turned into a loss of US$684.0m, with net margin dropping from 94.3% to well below zero. That mix cut both ways for the October 2025 cases.

The key assumption this period turned on was profitable scaling, not just contract size. For any future AI infrastructure stock, check whether promised high margins show up in net income and net margin, especially once capex and financing for GPU build outs start running through the income statement.

What You Would Be Paying For In IREN After The Fall

IREN trades at US$26.25 today, far below where earlier optimism met reality. The current Narrative’s Fair Value sits above that price, reflecting a view that the AI cloud and energy footprint together still justify a richer appraisal than the market now offers.

The crux is execution. A buyer today would need confidence that IREN can turn its renewable powered sites and GPU build out into durable AI infrastructure earnings, not just Bitcoin linked cash flow. The opportunity, rather than a warning, hinges on that operational shift working as described.

"When I wrote this, I viewed IREN as a best-in-class Bitcoin miner, and I was quite skeptical of its "pivot" to AI. You'll see I even called it a "PR effort." I was focused on mining efficiency, energy contracts, and Bitcoin cycles. I was wrong."

Looking One Step Beyond IREN

Watching IREN lean into AI infrastructure might raise another question. Where do the tools that actually power those AI workloads live?

You notice the data centers, the chips, the flashy AI branding. Less visible is the software layer that helps enterprises coordinate everything.

One heavyweight in that layer builds cloud platforms, office tools and coding environments with embedded AI assistants. It concentrates on turning everyday workflows into recurring digital habits.

As more core work moves inside that ecosystem, AI exposure looks different. The key issue shifts from mining and power toward who controls the daily workflow.
