Société Générale (ENXTPA:GLE) Stock Drops Despite Strong Q3 Earnings
Share
Listen to the news

Societe Generale stock closed at €60.99 on Friday, after a choppy month that left the share price down about 12% over 30 days and roughly 25% over the past quarter. That short term slide meets a very different story in the Q3 2026 release, where the bank reported group net income of €1.9b and a return on tangible equity of 13%. In the near term traders are focused on the chart. Longer term investors are focused on a profitability trend and cost base that appear designed for more than just the next quarter.

Love the €1.9b Q3 profit and 13% return on tangible equity but uneasy about a share price that just dropped roughly 25% in a quarter? Société Générale’s Cost Playbook Meets Early Targets

The bullish story hangs on execution, not promises.

"The main thing that has to go right is successful execution of the multi year efficiency and capital return plan, including reaching the targeted cost base of €16.3b in 2029, maintaining CET1 above 13%, and delivering the planned ordinary and excess capital distributions."

Q3 puts hard markers on that plan. Société Générale reported a 57.1% cost to income ratio in the quarter and 58.8% for the first nine months, which is already better than its sub 60% 2026 aim. CET1 stands at 13.4% after a €1.5b extraordinary buyback, which indicates surplus capital and early progress on the distribution agenda that the bullish camp focuses on.

Société Générale Bears Eye Cost Fatigue Risk

The more cautious view argues that Société Générale has already picked the low hanging fruit on savings and that the next phase of cuts will be slower and messier.

"Although Société Générale Société anonyme has already delivered sizeable cost savings and targets €1.9b of further gross savings by 2029, management now indicates that the easiest efficiency wins are largely taken. Any shortfall or delay in deeper IT simplification, procurement discipline and headcount attrition would leave operating costs closer to current levels and restrict improvement in the cost to income ratio and net margins."

This quarter does not show that concern biting yet. The group cost to income ratio is already below the 2026 goal and every pillar sits under year end efficiency targets. What is missing is proof that IT and AI programs are starting to compress absolute costs, not just ride strong revenues. Until operating expenses flatten or fall in euro terms, the worry about tougher savings later in the plan remains unresolved rather than wrong.

Hunt For Quiet Dislocations

Société Générale Société anonyme reports solid earnings while the share price moves sharply. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.

  • Company 1 - 24% below our estimate - convert rising demand for grid upgrades and test systems into higher margin projects through tighter integration of acquired diagnostics assets.
  • Company 2 - 20% below our estimate - scale an expanding teahouse network as membership driven spending and higher growth overseas outlets shift the mix toward stronger unit economics.
  • Company 3 - 34% below our estimate - extend an IT infrastructure reseller model into AI heavy and international projects through integration of recently acquired high touch enterprise customers.
