HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Killingly Public Schools ("KPS"), a school district located in Killingly, Connecticut, was the victim of a recent data privacy incident involving certain personally identifiable information ("PII").

What Happened: In October 2025, KPS detected a disruption to its computer network. Upon learning of the activity, KPS took immediate action to secure its systems which included taking parts of its network offline. KPS partnered with cybersecurity specialists to restore its network and investigate the nature and scope of the event. The investigation determined that certain data was accessed on its network without authorization. KPS then conducted a thorough review of the data to identify what personal information, if any, was contained in the potentially affected files and to whom that information belonged. KPS thereafter commenced a comprehensive review to determine whose information was contained within those files, which concluded on September 23, 2026.

What KPS is Doing: Upon learning of the event, KPS took immediate action to contain and remediate the issue, including taking parts of its network offline. However, core services were restored the same day. KPS partnered with cybersecurity specialists to thoroughly investigate the incident and notified federal law enforcement. KPS reset account passwords and continues to utilize multi-factor authentication for its systems. Additionally, KPS is assessing its existing security safeguards and policies for ways it can strengthen its systems and increase resilience against evolving threats.

What You Can Do: To date, KPS has no evidence of misuse of any PII for fraud or identity theft. However, as a general matter, it is best practice to remain vigilant for incidents of identity theft and fraud, from any source, by reviewing and monitoring your account statements and free credit reports for suspicious activity and errors. If you discover any suspicious or unusual activity on your accounts, promptly contact your financial institution or the service provider.
