Amazon.com stock closed at US$240.47, down 1.4% on Friday, capping a month where the share price slipped about 3.5% and roughly 11.5% over three months. Traders focused on the red on the screen while the business delivered a Q3 2026 report built around one clear headline: operating profitability.
Revenue for the quarter reached US$201.9b and operating income came in at US$28.1b, which produced a record 13.9% operating margin for a company of this scale. In the short term, the reaction looked lukewarm. Over a multi year lens, that kind of margin profile is the type of development that can reset how investors model Amazon.com.

Amazon says AWS could be a $1T business within a decade. Ask Charlie what might unlock Amazon.com's $1T AWS ambition.
The bullish script says Amazon.com can turn heavy AI investment into a powerful earnings machine anchored in AWS, custom chips and new infrastructure.
"Analysts expect Amazon.com to keep leaning on AWS and AI, with recent AI related revenue and custom chip traction supporting a view that high margin cloud services remain the primary profit engine."
Q3 results give that idea real footing. AWS delivered US$46b revenue with 39.3% growth and a 38.7% operating margin, helping push group operating margin to a record 13.9%. Chip revenue commitments rose sharply and Bedrock adoption deepened, which lines up with the claim that AI workloads are already supporting richer profitability.
The cautionary story argues that outsized AI infrastructure spending and political scrutiny over tax treatment could choke Amazon.com’s free cash flow and returns.
"Amazon.com is committing very large cash CapEx of more than US$40b per quarter and guiding to roughly US$220b in 2026, with most of it going into AWS and AI data centers at the same time as political scrutiny increases around tax deductions for that spending."
That warning is front and center. Q3 cash CapEx reached US$75.9b and full year plans sit near US$220b. Free cash flow ran deeply negative at roughly US$42.4b in the quarter, even with strong AWS profit, and fresh probes into AI linked tax breaks keep the regulatory overhang live rather than theoretical.
