What BAE Systems Doubters Overlooked
Share
Listen to the news

BAE Systems spent 2026 landing fresh defence work, from a $149.8 million award on the USS Boxer to a $535 million howitzer contract and a live fire test of its new Adaptable Deck Launcher for the U.S. Navy. Holding BAE Systems from the start of the year would have returned 20.2%, including dividends. If you were weighing a purchase back on 1 January, what did you need to believe about future orders and profit conversion for that payoff to feel reasonable?

The Argument You Would Have Been Weighing Up On BAE Systems

The shares cost £17.14 at the start of the period, and BAE Systems sat between two very different stories about where defence demand might go next.

The bullish narrative pointed to a Fair Value of £20.69. This was a rough guide to what the stock could be worth if its assumptions played out, anchored in a £75b backlog and expectations for 10.0% annual revenue growth with margins edging up from 7.2% to 7.6%.

The bearish view leaned on a Fair Value of £13. It was built around the idea that defence budgets might tighten, with revenue growth assumed at 9.8% but margins slipping from 7.2% to 7.1% and ESG pressure raising long term risks to funding and contracts.

What The Evidence Did To The BAE Systems Argument

The July 2026 half year showed BAE Systems with revenue of £14,615m and net income of £1,020m, up from £13,571m and £969m a year earlier, which supported the bullish focus on order conversion. The live fire Adaptable Deck Launcher test and upgraded full year guidance also leaned that way, although net margin slipped from 7.1% to 7.0%, so the period cut both ways.

The lesson is clear. When a story leans on backlogs and high tech programs, you need to track two things in later reports: conversion of orders into actual sales, and whether margin percentage moves in the same direction as profit.

What BAE Systems' Run Already Prices In

BAE Systems now trades at £20.7, above where this Narrative’s Fair Value estimate sits. The Narrative argues that the recent gain, from £17.14 at the start of the year, already leans heavily on smooth execution of a large, complex backlog.

A buyer today effectively banks on that order book turning into dependable earnings and cash flow. The Narrative asks how lumpy programme milestones, localisation pushes and crowded new technologies might stress that assumption.

"The main factor that has to go right is that BAE Systems continues converting its large, multi decade backlog and pipeline in areas such as GCAP, SSN AUKUS, MBDA missiles, munitions, and drones into sustained growth, margin expansion, and strong cash generation while maintaining disciplined capital allocation."

Looking One Step Beyond BAE Systems

BAE Systems focuses on hardware, programs and long contracts on Earth. The next question is who quietly builds the space backbone.

Missile warning, secure links and global positioning depend on assets in orbit. These tools need rockets, satellites and software working together as critical infrastructure.

Another business is trying to own more of that chain. It designs and launches rockets while also supplying the spacecraft riding on them.

The aim is simple. Become a low cost, highly reliable provider that space based internet, imaging and tracking services can trust.

If that happens, your defence research could naturally extend into the economics of routine commercial spaceflight.
