Hope Bancorp’s deposit and credit thesis on trial

Bulls argue that Hope Bancorp’s deposit mix shift and credit clean up can turn recent progress into sturdier earnings power over time.

"Hope Bancorp needs its shift toward lower cost, more diversified deposits, efficiency improvements, and credit clean up to keep working in combination so that recent revenue, margin, and earnings gains translate into more durable profitability than in the past five years."

Q3 supports that story in part. NIM reached 3.02%, helped by time deposits falling while non maturity balances rose. The efficiency ratio improved to 63.6% ex notables. Criticized loans and net charge offs both moved lower. The small EPS miss against consensus shows the profitability bridge is not yet fully built.

Hope Bancorp’s execution risks and concentration worries

On the flip side, skeptics focus on whether structural weaknesses and concentration risks will blunt these improvements.

"Heavy concentration in commercial real estate loans and small business lending, even after recent growth in deposits and loans at Hope Bancorp, could still lead to elevated credit losses in a downturn, which would pressure net interest income and reduce earnings."

Current numbers argue that this concern has not surfaced in Q3. Criticized loans declined to US$335m and nonperforming assets fell to 57 bps of assets, with net charge offs at 19 bps. Provision expense increased to US$9m, which shows management still adding protection rather than releasing reserves against that concentrated book.

Hunt For Quiet Pricing Gaps

Hope Bancorp just showed how cleaner fundamentals and a softer share move can point in different directions for investors. The real opportunity is spotting stocks that could be undervalued before the market closes that gap.

  • Company 1 - 38% below our estimate - expand a new manufacturing and supply chain build out while pushing higher margin protective films through installers and dealer channels.
  • Company 2 - 21% below our estimate - scale fresh production capacity with more complex photonics packaging as AI data centers and telecom customers award higher value manufacturing mandates.
  • Company 3 - 31% below our estimate - embed custom chips and software at critical digital infrastructure choke points where performance, reliability and scale keep long term customer contracts sticky.

That is three of the list. See all 29 potentially undervalued companies →
