Rocket Companies just reported Q3 2026 and the stock ripped 7.4% to about US$12.80 by the close. Traders rushed in on a headline set of mortgage results that delivered US$0.25 in basic earnings per share and US$3.3b in revenue, both punchy numbers for a housing finance operator in a difficult rate backdrop.
The real story is margin power. Investors cheered the move in the share price, yet the earnings print hinged on a rich adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization margin that reflects deep cost work and servicing scale. The gap between that emotional one day jump and the underlying profit mix is the focus of the rest of this report.

Rocket posted its best EBITDA margin in about five years. Ask Charlie what makes Rocket’s margins so resilient now.
The bullish pitch says Rocket Companies must turn its broader ecosystem into actual loans and sticky income, not just clicks and app users.
"The main factor that has to go right is that Rocket Companies continues to convert its larger ecosystem of Redfin users and servicing clients into closed loans and recurring revenue, despite a housing market that management describes as very challenging."
Q3 results give that claim real footing. Net rate locks reached US$40.4b and closed volume hit US$43.6b in what management calls a very difficult market. Servicing fees topped US$1b and record recapture rates turned existing clients into fresh production. A 29% adjusted EBITDA margin, the strongest in roughly five years, shows that this conversion is already flowing through to profitability, not just volume.

Bearish investors worry Rocket Companies will see its cost edge eroded as rules tighten and compliance work piles up.
"Intensifying regulatory scrutiny in the mortgage sector, driven by heightened consumer protection and tightening compliance requirements, will increase Rocket's legal and operational costs, erode efficiency gains from automation, and diminish net margins over the long term."
This quarter cuts against that concern. Total expenses were US$2.3b while adjusted EBITDA margin reached 29%, described as a five year high. Management still calls out regulation as a risk, yet line items show cost saves, Mr. Cooper synergies and AI tools offsetting any visible compliance drag so far.
Rocket Companies just showed how fast sentiment can swing when margins surprise. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before stronger fundamentals show up in the price.
