Edison International stock slipped about 1% to US$58.79 today, a muted reaction considering the company just posted solid Q3 2026 earnings with basic EPS of US$1.88 and net income of US$724 million. Traders focused on the red on the screen. Long term holders will likely be watching a different story, where a low 6.2x P/E and a reported 19.6% net margin sit alongside a hefty one off gain and ongoing wildfire and balance sheet pressures.

Edison International says delay on wildfire reform could hit customer costs. Ask Charlie what Edison International risks without wildfire reform now.
The bullish pitch hangs on wildfire financing turning into real balance sheet relief rather than just a talking point.
"The successful US$2b Woolsey Fire cost recovery securitization, completed with strong investor demand and used to repay related debt, provides a playbook for Edison International to recycle wildfire related exposures into lower cost, non equity capital structures that support its target FFO to debt range."
Q3 results show Edison International still reaffirming 2026 core EPS guidance and a 5% to 7% growth target through 2030, while reiterating an FFO to debt goal of 15% to 17% and no common equity issuance through 2030. That combination indicates the Woolsey structure is already embedded in planning, even if Eaton Fire exposures remain unresolved.

Bears argue that wildfire exposure and credit strain will keep Edison International on the back foot even with solid operational delivery.
"Credit pressure highlighted by a recent S&P downgrade and management’s warnings about the consequences of missing further wildfire reforms point to a possible step up in borrowing costs that flow through to customer bills. This may tighten future regulatory decisions on allowed returns and limit the earnings uplift from the large grid investment program."
Q3 core EPS of US$1.92 and reaffirmed 2026 guidance show earnings targets intact. However, the S&P downgrade already exists, wildfire reforms failed in August, and management still cannot size Eaton Fire reserves. Those are clear milestones missed on de-risking, which leaves the bearish credit and liability thesis largely intact despite the guidance hold.
