If you had picked Bodycote for your 2026 watchlist, the return alone would probably make you reopen your notes. Holding Bodycote from the start of the year would have returned 33.1%, including dividends. Investors looking back now see a period that ended with firm H1 2026 profit improvement and an agreed cash takeover on the table. If that decision on 1 January hinged on aerospace expansion, Industry 4.0 technology or shrinking European demand, which factor would you treat as decisive today?
Bodycote has already moved. See which of 12 high quality undervalued stocks still trade below our estimates.
The shares cost £6.98 at the start of the period. Anyone eyeing Bodycote then had to decide which story felt more realistic rather than hunting for a single perfect forecast.
The bullish narrative pointed to a Fair Value of £7.41, a price implied by expectations that U.S. aerospace and defense expansion and Industry 4.0 style technologies such as HIP would support a stronger mix and higher margins.
The bearish case leaned on a Fair Value of £6.1, built on concerns that reshoring and stricter environmental rules could pressure cross-border work, raise energy costs, and reduce revenue from traditional processes.
The agreed cash acquisition of Bodycote by Vulcan Alpha Bidco, alongside rising institutional positions, backed the bullish view that this was a business others wanted greater exposure to. H1 2026 results added hard numbers. Revenue reached £381.2m and net income £31m, with net margin at 8.1%. That combination cut both ways rather than cleanly settling the debate.
The hinge here was profitability rather than headlines. When you assess another industrial stock, track whether net margin and absolute earnings are moving in the same direction as the original thesis you wrote down.
Bodycote now trades at £9.15, up from £6.98 from the start of the year. The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below the current price, which frames today’s level as already pricing in a lot of the expected execution upside.
The key question is what has to keep working. A buyer today has to judge whether Bodycote can convert its mix shift, cost programs and bid activity into lasting margin gains despite restructuring costs and pressure in older automotive and industrial work.
"The numbers implied by the current valuation leave limited allowance for ongoing auto and industrial weakness and execution risk around footprint rationalisation and bid activity. The share price assumes Bodycote delivers on its mix shift, cost savings and capital deployment with little room for disappointment."

Bodycote shows how materials work quietly in the background. Heat treatment, improved alloys and tighter tolerances support more demanding engineering projects.
Now lift that idea into orbit. Space companies still look for cheaper launch capacity and hardware that survives harsh conditions.
One specialist targets both needs. It builds small rockets and supplies the spacecraft hardware that rides on them.
The aim is straightforward. Make access to orbit routine so others can build new services above it.
If that effort gains ground, your watchlist could stretch well beyond foundries and furnaces.
