What Salzgitter Doubters Got Wrong
Share
Listen to the news

Salzgitter spent much of the past year talking about cost savings, green hydrogen contracts and cautious guidance, while quarterly figures still showed revenue slipping and losses narrowing only gradually. For Salzgitter shareholders, the return over the past year was 68.0%, including dividends. If you had been weighing those Q2 2025 to Q2 2026 numbers and the mixed analyst views back on 2025-10-30, what would have made that outcome seem remotely plausible?

If the move has made Salzgitter harder to judge, start where the gap is still open and scan 204 high quality undervalued stocks.

The Two Salzgitter Stories Investors Had To Hold In Their Heads

The shares cost €28.68 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Salzgitter then had to choose which future seemed more realistic.

On the bullish side, one camp argued that EU decarbonization and trade rules could transform the group. Their Fair Value was €40.03, essentially the price implied if revenue grew 3.5% a year and profit margins moved from a loss into 4.6%.

The more cautious view still saw progress but worried about pressure points. This Narrative put Fair Value at €23.24 and focused on risks from heightened import competition and heavy restructuring costs that could drag on profitability and cash flow.

What The Evidence Did To The Salzgitter Argument

Salzgitter’s Q1 and nine month 2026 reports showed EBITDA and earnings before tax ahead of the prior year and above market expectations, with raised guidance and support from lower input costs, EU safeguard measures, and green hydrogen and renewable power contracts. Yet Q2 2026 still recorded a loss of €40 million and a net margin of -1.8% on €2,242.8 million of revenue, so profitability remained unproven. The period cut both ways.

The hinge assumption here was that decarbonization spending and EU protection would quickly feed through to earnings. For any other industrial stock built on a similar story, it may be useful to watch whether revenue, absolute profit, and net margin all move together in quarterly results rather than pricing in the policy story alone.

What Salzgitter’s Price Now Asks You To Believe

Salzgitter trades at €47.1 today, after a 68.0% total return over the past year. The selected Narrative sees Fair Value above that price and anchors its case on better steel pricing, cost programs and policy support offsetting weaker demand and high decarbonization spending.

For any buyer now, the key judgement is whether Salzgitter can keep funding SALCOS, HKM and P28 while holding a broadly stable net financial position and turning these projects into durable earnings strength.

"While public funding and guidance imply that SALCOS Phase 1 remains on schedule toward 2027 commissioning, the sizeable remaining net capex and the long lead time before the new assets generate cash create a multi year period in which earnings and free cash flow remain exposed to project execution risk and potential cost overruns."
