11:51 PM EST, 11/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The European Union and Canada finalized negotiations on new digital trade and critical minerals investment deals amid efforts to strengthen economic and strategic ties between the two parties, according to an Oct. 30 joint statement. Unveiled at their 21st summit in Montréal, Canada, alongside the new Canada-EU Alliance for the Future initiative, the new digital trade deal is intended to complement the parties' preexisting comprehensive economic and trade agreement by creating a framework that secures cross-border data flows and builds market confidence. Talks on a second-generation competition agreement were also concluded to bolster regulatory cooperation and crack down on anti-competitive conduct. Canada and the European Investment Bank also finalized an agreement to bring European capital into critical Canadian raw materials, while launching new diplomatic dialogues on the Arctic, climate security, transport, and foreign interference. Simultaneously, Canada is joining the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking to integrate artificial intelligence and supercomputing ecosystems. The Canada-EU alliance seeks to create "unprecedented opportunities" across the Atlantic through targeted cooperation in trade, technology, energy, and financial services. The framework also aims to strengthen shared commitments to security, crisis readiness, and enhanced mobility for citizens.
