Sumco Shares Rose Even As It Swung To A Loss
Share
Listen to the news

If you only skimmed Sumco headlines this year, the story looked rough. Earnings swung into a loss even as revenue moved higher and analysts argued over whether supply or valuation posed the bigger problem. Holding Sumco from the start of the year would have returned 57.2%, including dividends. If you had bought on 1 January knowing only the split between bullish and bearish views, what exactly were you being paid to believe about this wafer maker?

A Narrative on Simply Wall St is one investor's written case for a company, with its growth, margin and multiple assumptions spelled out. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

What Sumco Investors Were Really Arguing About

The shares cost ¥1,435 at the start of the period, and the debate around Sumco split cleanly into two stories that both sounded plausible.

On the bullish side, the Narrative put Fair Value at ¥2,900 and leaned on AI and electrification driving demand for premium 300-millimeter wafers, with Sumco assumed to capture a disproportionate share of that higher value segment.

The bearish view argued for Fair Value of ¥954 and focused on supply chain decoupling, with Chinese policy expected to cause a structural collapse in conventional wafer sales into China that would cap future volumes.

What The Results Changed In The Sumco Debate

The clearest new fact was Sumco's move into a loss. Net income shifted from ¥34 million in Q2 2025 to a loss of ¥4,426 million in Q2 2026, and net margin went from 0.0% to 3.9% in the red while revenue sat at ¥113,614 million. That undercut the bullish profitability story and left the cautious case looking closer to the reported reality.

The hinge here was not demand headlines. It was whether higher wafer sales would quickly feed through to cleaner earnings. When you test a similar story elsewhere, track the mix of revenue, net income and net margin together rather than relying on big product themes.

What Today's Sumco Price Already Assumes

Sumco now trades at ¥2,272 from the start of the year, after a 57.2% gain, while the current Narrative Fair Value sits below that level.

The selected Narrative argues that losses, AI-concentrated wafer demand and margin pressure still frame the risk. For today’s price to hold, a buyer would be assuming AI-driven 300mm demand steadily outweighs weakness in older wafers and high depreciation.

"Although Sumco expects AI related demand for 300mm leading-edge wafers to support higher Q2 FY2026 sales and a higher EBITDA margin, the company is still guiding to an operating loss of JPY 2.5 billion. This suggests that even strong AI server demand may not be enough to restore operating profit or earnings in the near term."
