What Calumet Holders Saw Before A 139% Jump
Share
Listen to the news

If you only glanced at Calumet’s wider losses and legal scrutiny in 2026, you might assume shareholders paid heavily for that mix of progress and problems. For Calumet shareholders, the return from the start of the year was 139.0%, including dividends. If you had been deciding on 1 January whether to back an indebted refiner trying to scale sustainable aviation fuel, how could you have weighed that outcome against the risks that were already on record?

If the move has made Calumet harder to judge, start where the gap is still open and scan 34 high quality undervalued stocks.

The Argument You Would Have Been Weighing On Calumet

The shares cost US$19.87 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Calumet then was really choosing between two very different futures for the refiner turned renewables player.

On the optimistic side, the bullish story pointed to a Fair Value of US$33, a rough guide to what that camp thought the stock was worth if its assumptions played out. This view was built on Calumet using renewable fuels growth of 12.5% a year to expand premium specialty markets.

The more cautious view put Fair Value at US$13.25 and leaned on the risk that regulatory volatility around renewable diesel, SAF credits, and tightening standards would restrict margins, even if the business eventually reached a 14.9% profit level.

What The Evidence Did To The Calumet Argument

Calumet delivered Q2 2026 revenue of US$1.45b with sales 40.8% above the prior year and adjusted EBITDA of US$175.2 million, which supported the optimistic case that the renewables build out could scale. The business still reported a loss of US$95.9 million and a net margin of -6.6%, so the profitability step in both fair value stories remained unproven. Overall the evidence cut both ways.

The key assumption investors had been betting on was that higher sustainable aviation fuel volumes and premium pricing would turn into positive earnings. When you assess another refiner pivoting into low carbon projects, track the combination of reported EBITDA, net income and net margin together rather than just contract wins or capacity headlines.

What Calumet’s Run Up 139% Already Assumes

Calumet now trades at US$46.73, after a 139.0% gain from the start of the year. The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below the current price, which reflects its own judgment about risk and reward rather than a settled answer.

That view focuses on whether debt reduction and Montana Renewables can fund heavy turnaround work and growth. A buyer today is effectively assuming MaxSAF execution supports strong, durable cash generation. How does the risk of contract strain or cost overruns affect that cash coverage story?

"The main thing that has to go right is that Calumet translates its debt reduction, DOE-backed funding at Montana Renewables and capital-efficient SAF expansion into sustained cash generation that comfortably covers heavy turnaround spending and future growth CapEx."
