Fox (FOXA) Stock Jumps On Q1 Earnings Despite Margin Pressure
Share
Listen to the news

Fox stock walked into this Q1 2027 report looking like a value story, trading on a trailing P/E below much of the media sector and only slightly above a discounted cash flow estimate. Then the numbers hit, and the mood flipped. A 6.9% jump to about $67 in regular trading shows traders latching onto a clean headline. Revenue of $4.6b and net income of $943m gave the market a simple message to cheer, even as longer term margin strain still lingers in the background.

Evaluating Fox’s Bull Case On Sports, News And Streaming

"Record engagement and audience share across core brands, including NFL on FOX, college football and FOX News, enhance Fox's negotiating leverage with distributors and advertisers."

Fox actually put that claim to work. World Cup and football coverage, plus Fox News, helped push advertising up 47% and distribution up 9%, which points to real pricing power rather than just more ad slots. Tubi’s 35% revenue lift and higher view time show the streaming plank of the story is also progressing. FOX One’s subscriber mix, with about 97% incremental to cable, supports the idea that live news and sports are widening reach, not just shifting it around.

Fox bear case on sports rights still unproven

The caution around Fox is that expensive long term sports contracts eventually eat into profit. That is a clear, testable worry.

"The escalating costs and long duration of premium sports rights, including the NFL, college football and Major League Baseball, could outpace advertising and affiliate fee growth over time. This may compress segment margins and limit earnings expansion in future contract cycles."

Q1 shows the opposite pattern for now. World Cup and football rights coincided with 47% advertising growth, 9% distribution gains and record EBITDA of US$1.64b. Trailing net margin slipped to 11.3% from 12.4%, so sports inflation risk has not disappeared. It is simply not yet visible as margin compression in this quarter.

Hunt Quiet Disconnects In Plain Sight

Fox just reported earnings that shifted how many investors see its prospects. The real opportunity is carefully finding stocks that may be undervalued before more investors reevaluate them.

  • Company 1 - 31% below our estimate - taps policy efforts to broaden workplace retirement access to deepen long-term account relationships and recurring fee streams.
  • Company 2 - 18% below our estimate - ramps a next generation NAND node so hyperscalers steer more data center storage budgets toward its higher density drives.
  • Company 3 - 49% below our estimate - pours heavy capital into AI advertising tools and infrastructure to expand monetization across messaging, agents and connected devices.
