Cabot (CBT) Stock Price Catches Q4 Earnings Margin Squeeze
Share
Listen to the news

Cabot stock took a hit after earnings, dropping almost 5% to US$72 even as the company closed out Q4 2026 with solid headline numbers. The quarter delivered basic earnings per share of about US$1.28 on US$1,009m of revenue, capping a full year where adjusted EPS landed at US$6.42. That pullback reflects investors refocusing on a single pressure point: the squeeze in profitability that has pulled trailing net profit margin down to 5.7% compared with 8.8% a year earlier.

Cabot Bull Case Hinges On Battery Materials Execution

Cabot’s bullish story leans heavily on Battery Materials turning into a higher margin engine that reshapes mix and earnings power over time.

"Deep relationships with global battery manufacturers and OEMs, highlighted by the multi‑year PowerCo agreement and a portfolio spanning conductive additives, fumed metal oxides and aerogel, position Cabot to win higher value programs over time. This can support mix, gross profit per ton and earnings."

FY26 results show early milestones. Battery Materials delivered about US$43m of EBITDA at roughly 26% margin and secured a US$50m DOE grant supported expansion across U.S. and China. Management now guides Battery Materials EBITDA only modestly higher in FY27, with a larger step up pushed into FY28.

Cabot Bear Case: Carbon Black Fears Confront Reality

The bear view argues that weaker carbon black economics will drag on Cabot long after this quarter. The clearest expression of that concern is below.

"Ongoing competitive intensity in Asia in Reinforcement Materials combined with customer agreement terms for calendar 2026 that already reduced gross profit per ton may signal structurally tougher market conditions. This can restrict future pricing power and hold back growth in revenue, EBIT and earnings per share."

Q4 data shows that risk emerging. Reinforcement Materials EBIT of US$87m came with lower gross profit per ton and an unfavorable regional mix, even as volumes rose 5%. Management also expects Q1 FY27 Reinforcement EBIT to be lower year on year because of those 2026 contracts. That combination indicates the pricing and profit headwind identified by the bearish narrative is present in these results and not just theoretical.

Hunt Mispriced Earnings Stories

Cabot just showed how a single pressure point can dominate the share price reaction after earnings. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.

  • Company 2 - 49% below our estimate - pour cash into AI infrastructure so advertisers can run automated campaigns and message customers inside its apps.
