02:49 AM EST, 11/04/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Sentiment in the German automotive sector "significantly" improved in October, driven by a new joint regulatory agreement with France, the ifo Institute said Wednesday. The business climate indicator improved to -4.1 points from -33.2 points in September. However, ifo industry expert Anita Wölfl expects the latest reading to be a "brief respite" as "sharp" monthly changes reflect "a very high level" of uncertainty across the sector. Much of this renewed optimism stems from the newly proposed Franco-German auto plan, which addresses key emissions targets. Under the proposal, carmakers must still reduce carbon emissions by 90% by 2035 against 2021 baselines, but the key change is that manufacturers will no longer need to offset the remaining 10%.
