Avis met Wall Street’s revenue expectations in Q3 2026, despite a 2.4% year-over-year sales decline. The market responded positively, as management emphasized that operational execution, particularly improved vehicle utilization, helped offset softer travel demand. CEO Brian Choi attributed performance to technology investments that streamlined fleet management, noting "Americas had the highest third quarter utilization in 20 years." However, CFO Daniel Cunha pointed out that operating costs did not adjust quickly enough to the dip in August demand, weighing on profitability.
Looking forward, management is focused on extracting more value from its fleet and modernizing revenue management systems. Choi outlined an ambitious initiative to overhaul the company’s 15-year-old Demand Fleet Pricing system, aiming for more precise optimization of pricing, transaction mix, and vehicle allocation. He commented, "We want to bring that same level of precision to revenue management, making better decisions about which demand we serve, when we take it, and at what price." The company expects these efforts, combined with ongoing cost initiatives, to position Avis for more consistent revenue and margin growth into 2027.
Management highlighted weaker summer travel demand, operational cost rigidity, and technology-driven efficiency as the main themes shaping the latest quarter. Strategic investments and cost discipline were also emphasized as key levers for margin recovery.
Avis’s outlook is driven by fleet right-sizing, new revenue management initiatives, and persistent industry cost pressures, with a focus on sustainable margin expansion.
Looking ahead, the StockStory team will be monitoring (1) the rollout and early financial impact of Avis’s new revenue management system, (2) further progress on cost reduction and procurement initiatives, and (3) the sustainability of RPD and utilization gains amid continued travel demand uncertainty. The pace of premium service expansion and response to industry-wide cost inflation will also be key indicators of execution.
