On a per-share basis, the Franklin, Tennessee-based company said it had profit of 38 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 60 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 46 cents per share.

The provider of inpatient behavioral health care services posted revenue of $895.3 million in the period, also surpassing Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $869.3 million.

Acadia Healthcare expects full-year earnings in the range of $1.70 to $1.80 per share, with revenue in the range of $3.44 billion to $3.46 billion.

Acadia Healthcare shares have more than doubled since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $32.25, an increase of 56% in the last 12 months.
