What Alibaba Group Holders Got Wrong Before The Slide
Share
Listen to the news

If you had backed Alibaba Group for its AI and cloud story a year ago, the outcome has been painful. For Alibaba Group shareholders, the loss over the past year was 35.5%, including dividends. That period closed with revenue higher but net margin down sharply, as heavy AI and quick commerce spending met fresh legal, regulatory and geopolitical shocks. If the original thesis leaned on 8.7% revenue growth, 14.0% margins and a 3.0x future P/E over three years, what exactly did it fail to allow for?

Alibaba Group has already moved. Pinpoint other ways to investigate the theme among 53 AI infrastructure stocks.

The Argument Alibaba Group Investors Were Really Weighing

The shares cost US$164 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Alibaba Group faced two very different stories built on AI, cloud and quick commerce spending.

The bullish view saw a Fair Value of US$180, which was used as a rough guide to what the price could be if 8.7% revenue growth, 14.0% profit margins and a 3.0x future P/E all held over three years.

The cautious case pointed to a Fair Value of US$107, with trade and regulatory risks and a 15.2x future P/E assumption over five years limiting enthusiasm despite 14.1% modelled revenue growth and 13.0% margins.

What The Results Changed For The Alibaba Group Story

Alibaba Group poured money into AI and cloud, with AI products becoming a much larger slice of cloud revenue and new chips like Zhenwu M890 and V900 launched. That backed the growth leg of the bullish case. The problem sat in the income statement. Revenue of CNY 268,953m came with net income of CNY 10,537m, and net margin fell to 3.9%, which supported the cautious view on profitability.

The lesson is simple. When a pitch leans on high future margins, you can track the reported net margin each year and see whether new AI and cloud spending pulls it toward or away from that target.

What Alibaba Group's Drop Now Asks You To Believe

Alibaba Group trades at US$105 today, a long way from where the last year began. The selected Narrative argues that its Fair Value sits above the current price and that the market still treats Alibaba mainly as a Chinese e-commerce play.

The core idea is that buyers today are really paying for a wider technology ecosystem that includes cloud, AI and a bundle of separate assets. Anyone stepping in at this level has to believe that this broader mix can be recognised and monetised to a degree that turns the recent fall into an entry point rather than a warning.

"If Alibaba Cloud, Ant Group, its AI investments, and other strategic holdings are valued appropriately, there is a compelling argument that Alibaba trades at a significant discount to its intrinsic value. The investment thesis is not simply that Alibaba is cheap."

  • Company 2 - 35% below our estimate - turns a large AI infrastructure contract backlog into subscription revenue despite heavy data center spending.
  • Company 3 - 22% below our estimate - supplies liquid cooling and power systems required in high-density AI data center builds.

Those are three of them. See the full list of 34 companies trading below our fair value estimates →
