Today's biggest moves

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) plummeted as investors are de-risking semiconductor holdings following the Democratic midterm sweep, while Tapestry (NYSE:TPR) shares jumped nearly 12% on a raised outlook. Meanwhile, TripAdvisor (NASDAQ:TRIP) shares dove 18% following quarterly misses and news of executive departures.

What this means for investors

Thursday's sharp sell-off reflects a growing reassessment of the artificial intelligence (AI) investment cycle. After years of soaring valuations and aggressive infrastructure spending, investors are increasingly questioning whether the billions being poured into AI data centers will generate sufficient returns to justify the investment. The recent midterm elections have added another layer of uncertainty, particularly around potential regulatory restrictions on future data-center development.

Importantly, the sell-off doesn't necessarily signal weakening demand for AI. Rather, Wall Street appears to be reconsidering how much future growth is already reflected in stock prices. With technology companies accounting for a substantial share of major indexes, selling pressure across semiconductors and AI infrastructure has quickly spread to the broader market.

For investors, the distinction between AI spending and AI profitability is becoming increasingly important. Companies with strong cash flows, sustainable earnings growth, and reasonable valuations may be better positioned to weather continued volatility, while those relying on aggressive growth expectations could face further pressure.
